The Old British Gentleman (Frank Harry) – una investigación

En el subforo dedicado a identificar a los generici del cine italiano, en thrillingforum.com, hay una página dedicada a un misterioso figurante, al que los usuarios de ese foro han dado en llamar Old British Gentleman. Ese hilo lo abrió Johan Melle, un forero noruego que tiene el logotipo de la productora Titanus en su avatar, el día 11 de diciembre de 2020¹.

El 2 de abril de 2023, Johan Melle logró identificar por casualidad al Old British Gentleman como padre del actor inglés, instalado en Roma, John Gayford. Johan encontró una publicación en el Facebook de Gayford fechada en 2012 que contiene una foto en blanco y negro del Old British Gentleman. En el texto que acompañaba la foto, Gayford decía que el señor retratado en ella era su padre.

John y Johan habían hablado alguna vez por Facebook, pero John nunca mencionó a su padre y a Johan nunca se le ocurrió preguntarle sobre el tema. Y es que John murió el 9 de julio de 2021, en Roma, y Johan descubrió que el Old British Gentleman había sido su padre casi dos años después.

Johan pidió información sobre el OBG a Rodd Dana, otro actor de doblaje coetáneo de Gayford, que había trabajado en Roma, y «Lo reconoció de inmediato y escribió: “El padre de John era un personaje encantador que se dejaba caer por Roma de vez en cuando. No sé si hacía doblajes, pero recuerdo que estaba con frecuencia en las salas de doblaje y en el restaurante Colony, donde todos íbamos a almorzar. Era un personaje brillante, ingenioso y deliciosamente inteligente. Me parece recordar que había trabajado en el cine británico, pero no estoy seguro”»². Por desgracia, Rodd no recordaba el nombre de ese misterioso Old British Gentleman.

Era hora de empezar mi propia investigación. El blog Westerns All’Italiana tiene una necrológica de John Gayford, escrita por Tom B., y publicada el 16 de septiembre de 2021. En ese breve obituario, leemos que John Gayford Harry (ése era su verdadero nombre completo) había nacido en el condado inglés de Hertfordshire el 20 de febrero de 1933.

Así que lo que hice fue buscar en Freebmd.org.uk la referencia al nacimiento de John. En el índice de nacimientos del año 1933 sólo figura un John Harry, cuyo middle name empieza por G. (lo que concuerda con Gayford), que nació en el primer trimestre de ese año (y recordemos que el actor del que hablamos nació en el mes de febrero), en el distrito de Edmonton, dividido entre los condados de Essex, Middlesex y… Hertfordshire. Así que creo que está fuera de cualquier duda razonable que ese John G. Harry que figura en el índice del Registro Civil británico se trata de John Gayford, el actor inglés que hizo carrera en Roma y a cuyo padre se refieren en thrillingforum.com como el Old British Gentleman.

En el índice de nacimientos a partir de 1912 se puede leer el apellido de soltera de la madre. Y, en el caso de John G. Harry, el apellido de la madre es King.

Ahora sólo faltaba buscar matrimonios entre hombres apellidados Harry y mujeres apellidadas King que se hubieran celebrado hasta unos veinticinco años antes del año 33. El único resultado que figura en ese índice dentro de un período temporal razonable es el matrimonio celebrado, durante el primer trimestre de 1920, entre Frank L. Harry y Betty J. King. Bien, pues ya tenemos el nombre, la inicial del middle name y el apellido del Old British Gentleman.

Al buscar las fechas de nacimiento y muerte de ese tal Frank L. Harry, surgieron unos pequeños problemas en mi búsqueda. Ese pequeño inconveniente se debe al hecho de que el nacimiento de Frank Leslie King no sucedió en suelo inglés, sino en la India, y por eso no figura en el índice del Registro Civil de Inglaterra y Gales consultable en freebmd.org.uk.

Pero una breve búsqueda por otros derroteros nos lleva a su fecha exacta y lugar de nacimiento: Assam, en Bengala, en la India controlada por el Imperio Británico, el 3 de noviembre de 1896. Incluso podemos consultar la fecha de  su bautismo, celebrado el 26 de diciembre del mismo año, también en la India.

Ese día de San Esteban en el que bautizaron a Frank Leslie Harry era el primer aniversario del matrimonio de sus padres. Éstos se llamaban Alfred Morgan Harry (nacido hacia 1863) y Ada Plaistowe (ídem 1866). En enlace de los padres del que fuera conocido como Old British Gentleman se celebró en Calcuta el 26 de diciembre de 1895.

Frank Leslie Harry fue enviado a Inglaterra a estudiar en algún momento de la primera década del siglo XX. En el censo británico de 1911, le encontramos ya como alumno de un internado en Surrey, Chesterhouse, en la localidad de Godalming.

Sabemos –por una nota en la Gaceta de Londres del 11 de mayo de 1915– que durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, Frank estuvo en el West Riding Regiment del Duque de Wellington³, donde alcanzó el grado de segundo lugarteniente⁴. Asímismo, Frank fue lugarteniente del Regimiento de Wiltshire⁵.

Terminada ya la guerra, Frank se casó con una joven de veinte años llamada Betty Juliette King, el 28 de enero de 1920. Su enlace fue inscrito en el Registro Civil del Distrito de Watford, en el condado de Hertfordshire⁶, concretamente en la localidad de Rickmansworth. Un año y medio después, el 9 de octubre de 1921, el primer hijo de la pareja, Peter Morgan Harry, nació en Larolai (India).

El 28 de febrero de 1924, Frank Leslie Harry abandonó Inglaterra para establecerse de nuevo en la India, concretamente en Bombay. Es de suponer que le acompañaba su esposa y su hijo.

Su segundo hijo, John, como hemos visto, nació en febrero de 1933. Cuando John tenía unos diez años, en plena Segunda Guerra Mundial, la familia se trasladó a la India, pues allí fue destinado Frank. En un documento de la web BritishMilitaryHistory.co.uk, vemos que Frank Leslie Harry ocupó el cargo de coronel («temporal») de la Indian Army, cargo para el que fue nombrado el 28 de junio de 1943⁷.

Ya por esos años, Frank Harry escribió y actuó en un «recruiting film» en un estudio cinematográfico de Bombay, según recordaba su hijo en Facebook⁸. Durante sus años como militar en la India, Frank Harry montó varios espectáculos para entretener a las tropas y evitar que se desmoralizaran.

Su hijo John Gayford llegó a Roma con el rodaje de Cleopatra. Ya no se movió de allí. Sus padres fueron a vivir con él. Frank empezó a trabajar como genérico en películas italianas a mediados de los años sesenta y hasta principios de los setenta, según lo que muestra la encomiable labor de Johan Melle en thrillingforum.com. Gracias a un artículo del periódico londinense The Daily Telegraph sabemos, además, que Frank y su esposa Betty celebraron su bodas de oro en Roma, el 28 de enero de 1970⁹.

Frank Leslie Harry falleció en Exeter en 1985. No disponemos de más precisión en la fecha de su óbito. Lo cierto es que Frank murió a los ochenta y ocho años, la misma edad a la que, treinta y seis años después, murió su hijo John en 2021.

In the subforum dedicated to identifying the generici in Italian films of the 60s and 70s, on thrillingforum.com, there is a page dedicated to a mysterious extra, whom the users of that forum have come to call Old British Gentleman. That thread was opened by Johan Melle, a Norwegian forum member who has the logo of the Titanus production company in his avatar, on December 11, 2020¹.

On April 2, 2023, Johan Melle managed to identify by chance the Old British Gentleman as the father of the English actor, living in Rome, John Gayford. Johan found a post on Gayford’s Facebook dated 2012 with a black and white photo of the Old British Gentleman. In the text accompanying the photo, Gayford said that the gentleman portrayed in it was his father.

John and Johan had spoken on Facebook a few times, but John never mentioned his father and it never occurred to Johan to ask him about it. John died on July 9, 2021, in Rome, and Johan only discovered that the Old British Gentleman had been his father almost two years later.

Johan asked Rodd Dana, another contemporary voice actor of Gayford, who had worked in Rome, for information about the OBG, and «he recognized him at once and wrote "John’s dad was a delightful character who just ‘popped’ into Rome on occasion. I don’t know if he did any dubbing, but I recall he was around frequently in dubbing ‘salas’ and frequently at the “Colony” restaurant where & when we all went for lunch. He was a bright, witty, and delightfully intelligent character. I seem to recall he had done some work in British cinema, but not certain"»². Unfortunately, Rodd could not remember the name of this mysterious Old British Gentleman.

It was time to start my own research. The blog Westerns All’Italiana has an obituary for John Gayford, written by Tom B., and published on September 16, 2021. In that brief obituary, we read that John Gayford Harry (that was his real full name) was born in the English county of Hertfordshire on February 20, 1933.

So what I did was look up on Freebmd.org.uk the reference to John’s birth. In the index of births for the year 1933 there is only one John Harry, whose middle name begins with G. (which matches Gayford), who was born in the first quarter of that year (and remember that the actor we are talking about was born in the month of February), in the district of Edmonton, divided between the counties of Essex, Middlesex and… Hertfordshire. So I think it is beyond reasonable doubt that the John G. Harry in the British Civil Registry index is John Gayford, the English actor who made his career in Rome and whose father is referred to on thrillingforum.com as the Old British Gentleman.

The index of births from 1912 onwards shows the mother's maiden name. And in the case of John G. Harry, the mother's surname is King.

Now all that was left to do was to look for marriages between men with the surname Harry and women with the surname King that had taken place up to about twenty-five years before John's birth. The only match in that index within a reasonable time frame is the marriage that took place during the first quarter of 1920 between Frank L. (Leslie) Harry and Betty J. (Juliette) King. Well, now we have the first name, middle name and family name of the Old British Gentleman.

When looking for the birth and death dates of this Frank L. Harry, a few minor problems arose in my search. That little inconvenience is due to the fact that Frank Leslie Harry wasn't born on English soil, but in India, and that is why he does not appear in the index of the Civil Registry of England and Wales available at freebmd.org.uk.

But a brief search along other paths leads us to his exact date and place of birth. Frank Leslie Harry was born in Assam, in Bengal, in British-ruled India, on November 3, 1896. We can even look up the date of his baptism, celebrated on December 26 of the same year, also in India.

That St. Stephen's Day on which Frank Leslie Harry was baptized was the first anniversary of his parents' marriage. His father's name was Alfred Morgan Harry (born around 1863) and his mother's name was Ada Plaistowe (ibid. 1866). Therefore, the marriage of the parents of the man who was known as the Old British Gentleman took place in Calcutta on 26 December 1895.

Frank Leslie Harry was sent to England to study sometime in the first decade of the 20th century. In the British census of 1911, we find him already as a student at a boarding school in Surrey, Chesterhouse, in the town of Godalming.

We know – from a note in the London Gazette of 11 May 1915 – that during the First World War, Frank was in the West Riding Regiment of the Duke of Wellington³, where he reached the rank of second lieutenant⁴. Likewise, Frank was a lieutenant in the Wiltshire Regiment⁵.

After the war, Frank married a nineteen-year-old woman named Betty Juliette King, on 28 January 1920. Betty was born the 30^th of April, 1900. Their marriage was registered in the Civil Registry of the Watford District, in the county of Hertfordshire⁶, specifically in the town of Rickmansworth. A year and a half later, on 9 October 1921, the couple's first son, Peter Morgan Harry, was born in Larolai, India.

On 28 February 1924, Frank Leslie Harry left England to settle back in India, specifically in Bombay. Presumably, he was accompanied by his wife and son.

Their second son, John, as we already mentioned several times, was born in February 1933 in England. When John was about ten years old, in the middle of the Second World War, the family moved to India, where Frank was posted. In a document on the BritishMilitaryHistory.co.uk website, we see that Frank Leslie Harry held the position of colonel («temporary») in the Indian Army, a rank to which he was promoted on 28 June 1943⁷. I'm not that well versed in military terminology, sorry.

Already in those years, Frank Harry wrote and acted in a "recruiting film" at a Bombay film studio, as his son recalled on Facebook⁸. During his years as a soldier in India, Frank Harry put on various shows to entertain the troops and prevent them from becoming demoralized.

His son John Gayford arrived in Rome during the filming of Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra, in the early Sixties, when the dolce vita was in full swing. From then on, he never left the Eternal City. Eventually, his parents moved to Rome as well.

Frank L. Harry began working as a generico in Italian films in the mid-sixties and through the early seventies, as shown by the commendable research done by Johan Melle of thrillingforum.com. Thanks to an article in the London newspaper The Daily Telegraph, we also know that Frank and his wife Betty celebrated their golden wedding in Rome on January 28, 1970⁹.

Frank Leslie Harry died in Exeter in 1985. We don't have a more precise date of death. Anyway, Frank died at the age of eighty-eight, the same age at which his son John died thirty-six years later in 2021.
